Absences

If your child is not well we do ask you to ‘phone into the Office to let us know. If we do not hear from you by 9.15am we shall try to contact you to check on the whereabouts of your child. By law, children must attend school unless there is a very good reason for them not to. Unauthorised absence has to be recorded.

Authorised absences are:

  • absence due to ill health or medical appointments
  • exclusion from school
  • school educational visits
  • days of religious observance
  • family holiday in exceptional circumstances – with the prior permission of the Headteacher
  • approved sporting activities – with the prior permission of the Headteacher
  • other occasions with the prior permission of the Headteacher.

Holiday forms may be obtained from the school office. Absences for holiday purposes can be damaging to your child’s education and therefore we discourage this practice.

Please do not take children out of school during the annual SATs tests. The dates for these are on the school calendar.

School Year

The school year is divided into three terms, Autumn (September -December), Spring (January - March/April) and Summer (March/ April - July).

At the end of each term there is a holiday which is for approximately two weeks at Christmas and Easter and six weeks in July and August. During each term there is a half-term holiday, which is one week in October, February and May/June. All holiday dates are sent to parents as soon as they are known. In addition to the fixed holidays the school is closed for five days each year for staff in-service training. These dates are notified to parents as soon as the training days have been arranged.

Emergency Closures

Occasionally, it is necessary for the school to remain closed in extremely bad weather conditions. If there is any doubt there are emergency contacts which you should ring to obtain information. Information is also publicised on local radio. Please do not ring the school as the phone is needed for essential outgoing calls. Information is also posted at the top of the Home page on this Website at the earliest opportunity. Many parents have found this to be the quickest and most reliable way of finding out about an emergency closure

It is the policy of the Local Education Authority that schools will remain open if at all possible. However, occasionally conditions are too bad for staff to travel safely into school necessitating a closure. These occasions are very rare.

Availability of Information

Regulations require the school to make certain items of information available at the school to parents and the public. The school holds information on the following:

  • The Local Authority's (LA) statement of curriculum policy and the Governing Body's statement of curriculum aims.
  • Statutory Instruments circulars and administrative memoranda relating to powers and duties under the "Curriculum" Section of the Education Reform Act.
  • Any published HMI/OFSTEDreports which refers explicitly to the school.
  • Schemes of work currently used by teachers in the school.
  • A full copy of the arrangements for the consideration of complaints about the school curriculum made by the LA.
  • The LA's agreed syllabus for Religious Education.
  • Copies of the prospectus, and of the Governing Body's School Profile, are available free to parents on request.

School Documents

Copies of any statutory documents about the curriculum, published reports on the school, schemes of work and school policies can be obtained from the school office.

Complaints

Any complaints are best dealt with by talking to the class teacher or Headteacher. A formal complaints procedure is in place and details can be obtained from the school office or the clerk to the Governing Body.

Money

Any money for payments brought to school should be in a sealed envelope, marked with the name of the child and what the money is for. It is helpful if all monies can be brought in at Monday morning registration.

Food

Children should bring a packed lunch in a small, named, secure container. Lunch is eaten under supervision. It is important that no glass or tin containers are brought to school. Fizzy drinks are not allowed; water is available in school. Hot lunches are available booked and paid for in advance.

Children may bring a fruit snack for playtimes if they wish.
