Opening morning for new Reception Intake 2024 Tuesday 21st November. 9-10 am & 11-12pm.

Phonics, Reading and Maths Schemes

In Reception Class, the children learn about number through the use of Numicon apparatus.

In KS1 (Years 1 and 2) and KS2 (Years 3 – 6), we follow the White Rose Maths planning materials.

Across the school, a CPA approach is used for calculations (concrete-pictorial-abstract), where the children use a range of apparatus, then represent the apparatus using pictures, and finally represent and solve their calculation using a written method.

We place a strong emphasis on discussion during maths lessons and children are encouraged to verbally explain their thinking.

We use a wide range of different reading schemes which have been ‘banded’ so that books with a similar ‘reading age’ are brought together in one box so that we can more easily match the right book to your child.

Children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 receive daily phonics lessons through the Read Write Inc. scheme. We also continue to provide phonics teaching beyond Key Stage 1 for children who need further input: children will continue with phonics instruction until they can decode securely. Phonics 1:1 tutoring will be provided for children who require extra support, for as long as they need it.  We aim for all children to be able to decode securely by Year 2 so that the focus can shift to building fluency: the Read Write Inc. scheme supports this progression in children’s reading. Children will bring home a storybook that they have practised at least three times in their lessons and will also bring home decodable book bag books at just the right level for them.
Phonics is a vital aspect of children learning to read, but it is equally important that they hear a variety of texts read fluently on a regular basis. Therefore, for children in Reception and Key Stage 1 we also send home quality picture and/or chapter books for parents and carers to read to and share with their children for pleasure.
